Why Standard Adhesives Fail in Freezers
Labeling in cold storage environments is one of the most demanding applications in the food industry. Cold storage warehouses, walk-in freezers, and industrial blast freezers subject labels to conditions that make standard adhesives fail within hours. The result: labels that peel off, barcodes that become unreadable, and traceability that breaks down.
The phenomenon is well documented. In cold conditions, standard adhesives crystallize and lose their tack. Moisture condensing on frosted packaging creates a water barrier that prevents the glue from bonding. The label slides, falls, or becomes illegible.
Freezer-Grade Adhesive Formulation
Freezer labels use a cryogenic adhesive specifically formulated to maintain adhesion at temperatures down to -40°C. This formulation stays flexible and tacky under freezing conditions, applies to frosted or damp surfaces, and maintains its hold throughout the product's shelf life.
- Adhesion at -40°C on frosted, damp, and frozen surfaces
- Direct application on packaging coming out of the blast freezer
- Permanent hold throughout the product's shelf life
Barcode Readability After Freezing
An unreadable barcode at receiving or shipping docks blocks the entire logistics chain. Freezer labels are designed to maintain barcode readability through freeze-thaw cycles. With a wax-resin or resin ribbon, the contrast and edge definition of the bars remain compliant with industrial scanner standards.
Ribbon recommendation: wax-resin for standard cold applications, pure resin for extreme environments (-40°C and below) or for labels exposed to direct moisture.
HACCP Compliance and Cold Chain Traceability
Freezer labels contribute directly to HACCP and CFIA compliance. Every label must remain readable and affixed to the product to enable traceability in case of withdrawal or recall. A label that detaches from the product breaks the traceability chain and exposes the company to regulatory risk.
Our freezer labels are available on white direct thermal paper (short-term) and on polypropylene thermal transfer (long-term, moisture-resistant). Both options are compatible with Zebra, Godex, Datamax, Sato, and Toshiba printers.
